چکیده

Epithelial ovarian tumors, especially serous carcinomas, are a topic of frequent study due to their high prevalence and devastating prognosis. Much of the recent advancements have centered on the newly characterized precursor lesions in the fallopian tube. Although high-grade and low-grade serous carcinomas have distinct molecular pathogenesis and cellular carcinogenetic pathways, a common precursor cell, the fallopian tube secretory cell, has been identified. The classification of serous cancers, cellular precursor lesions and carcinogenesis is discussed in detail in this review, focusing on the role of the fallopian tube in the development of neoplasia. The development of prophylactic measures is also described, with particular emphasis on ovary-sparing salpingectomies for the prevention of ovarian serous cancer. Studies on the topic of tubal contribution of ovarian serous cancer development were identified for this review by searching the English language literature in the PubMed database, including publications from our own group. This was followed by a review of bibliographies from articles found through the search. Commentary from authors on the topic and clinical impact is also provided.

Carcinomas of Distal Fallopian Tube and Their Association with Tubal Intraepithelial Carcinoma: Do They Share a Common “Precursor” Lesion? Loss of Heterozygosity and Immunohistochemical Analysis Using PAX 2, WT-1, and P53 Markers

As the role of distal fallopian tube as organ of serous carcinogenesis is emerging, additional literature on the role of tubal intraepithelial carcinoma (TIC) as a precursor lesion in a subset of primary peritoneal serous carcinomas (PPSC is emerging as well. TIC although fallopian tube in origin can be genetically related to ovarian/peritoneal carcinomas. The role of PAX2 in primary fallopian ...

High-Grade Serous Ovarian Cancers

The fallopian tube is now generally considered the dominant site of origin for high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma. However, the molecular pathogenesis of fallopian tube-derived serous carcinomas is poorly understood and there are few experimental studies examining the transformation of human fallopian tube cells. Prompted by recent genomic analyses that identified cyclin E1 (CCNE1) gene amplif...

Proteomic analyses of serous and endometrioid epithelial ovarian cancers - cases studies - molecular insights of a possible histological etiology of serous ovarian cancer.

PURPOSE Epithelial ovarian carcinogenesis may occur de novo on the surface of ovarian mesothelial epithelial cells or from cells originating in other organs. Foreign Müllerian cell intrusion into the ovarian environment has been hypothesized to explain the latter scenario. In this study, MALDI MS profiling technology was used to provide molecular insights regarding these potentially different m...

Genomic alterations in fallopian tube carcinoma: comparison to serous uterine and ovarian carcinomas reveals similarity suggesting likeness in molecular pathogenesis.

Serous carcinomas of the fallopian tube, uterus, and ovary resemble each other both histologically and in clinical behavior. Comparative genomic hybridization was performed on 20 primary fallopian tube carcinoma specimens to find regions of the genome involved in tubal carcinogenesis and to compare the genomic alterations with those previously detected in serous ovarian and uterine carcinomas. ...

Fallopian Tube Carcinoma: A Case Report and Review of Litrature

Primary fallopian tube carcinoma is a rare tumor that histologically and clinically resembles epithelial ovarian cancer. Here we introduce a case of tubal carcinoma in a postmenopausal woman. The diagnosis of primary fallopian tube carcinoma is rarely considered preoperatively and is usually first appreciated by the pathologist. Because of low frequency of tubal carcinoma, there are few systemi...
